  Navigation Coastal - including GPS

Runs for 6  x 3 hour sessions on a Monday evening between 7pm and 10pm. 
 
Shore based Learning is a very important part of any yacht training. In particular those wishing to venture offshore should seriously consider this course. National and International Cruising Schemes require this as a pre requisite. Those wishing to become skippers or to extend their boating beyond inland waters should consider this training.
 
Subjects included in the program are:
Essential navigation tools, and marine charts
signs and abbreviations
publications of tidal streams and coastal information.
Setting courses to steer, tides, currents and leeway. Tide heights.
Understanding the Magnetic Compass and hand bearing compass.
Methods of position fixing, radio direction finder, depth sounder, ships log
GPS. Global Positioning System use and functions
Weather reports and forecasting services.
Lights and shapes, precautions to be taken when sailing at night.
Buoyage and IALA systems.
Essential regulationas and a Navigator's responsibilitiies..

Practical exercises of navigation are given throughout the course, using chart AUS 143 (Port Philip) which is supplied to each participant.. 
 
Navigation instruments and publications are available for purchase throughout the course.
 
Conducted at St Kilda Coast Guard Center or Sandringham Yacht club.
